How can we minimize Instagram’s harmful effects?
Research
Research shows that Instagram use is linked to various mental health issues such as depression, body image concerns, self-esteem problems, and social anxiety. Specific experiences on Instagram, like social comparison and the addictive nature of the platform, contribute to these negative impacts.
Both teens and adults are affected, with particular vulnerability among teenage girls and gender diverse adolescents.
Instagram’s core design — likes, edited photos, and digital status — amplifies harmful behaviors and emotional distress.
