Overview
problem
Traditional methods of conception and pregnancy present significant barriers — physical, emotional, social, and logistical — for many people. Ovum addresses the following key challenges:
High maternal mortality rates and pregnancy complications
Infertility and the limitations of IVF
Barriers for same-sex couples and single parents
Genetic disorder screening and early-stage control
Lifestyle constraints due to work or personal priorities
These barriers make the journey to parenthood inaccessible or overwhelming for many, reinforcing outdated norms around who can start a family and how.
Research
Not a fantasy anymore!
What once sounded like science fiction is now a scientific reality. With artificial wombs, placentas, and ex vivo gestation systems in development, science is actively progressing in this direction, and Ovum envisions what that future could look like for actual families.
As of 2025:
EVE Therapy, a Japan–Australia biotech collaboration, has developed an experimental artificial womb system capable of sustaining embryo growth outside the human body. While currently focused on supporting premature infants, it marks a major milestone in external gestation technology.
